Messy Joshua - at Redgate School

Man and child painting stonesOn Sunday 14th October, Messy Church Formby spent the afternoon learning about Joshua. All the activities were based on elements of Joshua's story and what we learn about God from these.

Joshua and the battle of Jericho
After the death of Moses, God chose Joshua, son of Nun, to be the leader of the Israelite people. They set about to conquer the land of Canaan, under the Lord's guidance. God said to Joshua, "Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Girl makimg shakerGod told Joshua to march around the city of Jericho once every day for six days with the seven priests carrying horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day they were to march around the city seven times and the priests were to blow their horns. This Joshua did, and he commanded his people not to give a war-cry until he told them to do so. On the seventh day, after marching around the city the seventh time, the priests sounded their horns, and Joshua ordered the people to shout. The walls of the city collapsed, and the Israelites were able to charge straight into the city. The city was completely destroyed, and every man, woman, and child in it was killed. Only Rahab and her family were spared, because she had hidden two spies sent by Joshua.

The Activities
Make a wall
children making a wall with icing and fruitUsing fondant icing, some food colouring and dried fruit we made stones which we used to create a wall. As you can see the ladies enjoyed this activity. Whilst making stones we talked about how the walls of Jericho tumbled down. How can walls be made stronger? How can we be made stronger? Jesus and God as our rocks, our foundations to build upon.

Making horns to blow the wall down

Boys making trumpetsGod told Joshua what to do, blowing a trumpet at the walls of Jericho may not have sounded a good idea. But Joshua did as God told him.

Joshua chapter 1; Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

We made horns and decorated them to represent the horns blown by the Isrealites.

Boy flower arrangingWe arranged flowers to make pretty table arrangements. The purpose of this activity was to illustrate The beauty of creation and all the colourful, wonderful things God has made and how He makes the flowers grow - seeds, sunshine, rain etc.

Revealing God's Love
God is invisible. We can’t see Him, but that doesn’t mean He isn’t real. He loves each one of us. He watches over us. If we give our lives to Him He will lead us, show us His way and meet our needs. He is with us all the time, and always ready to listen to us and help us.Girls painting

Girls paintingTo illustrate this we used white wax crayons to draw pictures and write messages on a piece of paper. When the paper was then painted it revealed the pictures and message.

Movers and Shakers:
Girl making shaker Psalm 100 ; .’Make a joyful noise unto the Lord - We are invitated to worship God not solemnly, but with joy and gladness, as if to a wedding.

We made shakers to make lots of noise to celebrate our time with God and Messy Church.

The worship
Worship timeAfter an hour of activities, we began our time of celebration and worship. John talked about Joshua and the battle of Jericho and how it relates to God. There was plenty of singing and dancing and we ended with a time of prayer

After the worship, we tucked in to a hot dog tea followed by an assortment of delicious cakes! During the supper we were able to enjoy a special time of fellowship which included birthday celebrations and lots of chat.
