Messy Church - Harvest

Girl with pasta corn dollyOn Sunday 15th September, Messy Church Formby spent the afternoon exploring Harvest thanksgiving. The activities were all based around this theme and included making furry hedgehogs; Birdfood for the autumn using apples; A - Z of fruit and vegetables - a sheet for each letter fruit painting; making a Corn Dolly with paper plates and pasta, cake decorating and weaving with wool. The worship pulled all these elements together and incorporated songs and prayer.

The Activities

Vegetable and fruit paintingEvery year on or near the Sunday of the Harvest Moon (This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox ) churches all over the country hold special services where thanks is given for a successful harvest. We celebrate this day, known as Harvest Festival, by singing, praying and decorating our churches with baskets of flowers and food.

Harvest Festival reminds Christians of all the good things God gives them. Traditionally, in schools and in Churches, people bring food from home to a Harvest Festival Service. After the service, the donated food is usually made into parcels and given to people in need.

At Messy Church we celebrated harvest in our own way with crafts and activities followed by worship and tea.

The Worship
After an hour of activities, we began our time of celebration and worship.

After the worship, we tucked in to a picnic tea followed by an assortment of delicious cakes! During the supper we were able to enjoy a special time of fellowship which included birthday celebrations and lots of chat.
